Tunneling happens when only a small portion of the wax around your candle wick melts and it appears to be burning straight down the center of the candle. Then you’re missing out on precious hours of great fragrance! Here’s how to prevent and fix candle tunneling.
Allow your candle’s melt pool to reach the edges of the jar at each burn. This will help to ensure tunneling does not occur!
If the candle's melt pool doesn't reach the edges of the jar, it will create a memory ring. Once the memory ring has been created, the melted portion of the candle will only melt within it.
Be sure to trim your wick to ¼ inch before each burn. No wick trimmer? A good scissor will work too.
First, wrap a thin layer of aluminum foil around the candle. This will help trap some heat. Make sure the foil hangs over the built-up wax areas, but leave an opening in the center so the wick can still burn properly.
Wait 30 minutes to 1 hour and the excess should melt and leave a smooth top on your candle now!
