The Biggest Problem With Most Air Fresheners and Candles

Most of us love a home that smells great, and one of the quickest and easiest ways to achieve that is with air fresheners and candles! 

So, what's the problem?

You don’t know what’s in them! 

Did you know that companies don’t have to list what goes into their air fresheners' and candles' fragrance because it’s a “trade secret”? 

Fragrance is considered a “trade secret” under the Fair Package and Labeling act of 1966, allowing companies to refrain from listing ingredients, so other companies can’t knock off their formulas. (The truth is that if someone wants to copy a fragrance, they can do it pretty easily!)⁠

Unfortunately, this gives brands an opportunity to add cheap (and sometimes toxic) chemicals to their products in order to make a scent stronger or last for longer.⁠

What ingredients are hiding in 'fragrance'?

Fragrances commonly contain phthalates, which are chemicals that help the scents last longer. Health risks for phthalates are startling and can include cancer, human reproductive and developmental toxicity, endocrine disruption, birth defects & respiratory problems.

Traditional petroleum-based air fresheners and candles can also include:

• Phthalates
• Parabens
• Petroleum & Synthetic Petrochemicals
• Carcinogens
• Mutagens
• Reproductive toxins

Doesn't sound like something you want in your home, right? Our products contain none of these!

Misleading terms to watch for

“Made with essential oils” often means 1% essential oils and 99% synthetic petrochemicals.

Other greenwashing catch phrases include:

• ‘natural’
• ‘plant-based’
• ‘plant-derived’
• ‘thoughtfully chosen ingredients’.

All of these things are great, but only when the claims can be backed up and proven true! 

Be cautious about brands that just want to tell you what’s missing from their products and don’t reveal the actual ingredients used to make a product, especially the fragrance.

What's the solution?

All of this terminology has no regulation so full transparency of ingredients is all we have to help us navigate products and make informed choices.
